Staff Accountant

Staff Accountant Position:

The Staff Accountant is a salaried, exempt position that reports to the Director of Finance. The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the annual goals of the organization, fulfilling operational obligations, and positioning the organization for sustainable growth. The Staff Accountant maintains accurate financial information for the organization.

Essential Duties:

Measurable Goals

  • Fulfill all operational obligations on time each month
  • Spend no more than budgeted for operations each month
  • Help the organization generate a net surplus each year

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain trusted internal and external relationships with funders, auditors, vendors, and internal staff
  • Identify improvements in how we can better serve entrepreneurs and then continually implement those ideas effectively, including more efficient internal operations
  • Manage risk for the organization by executing sound policies, procedures, and reporting for accounting, compliance, and general operations
  • Measure the value we provide entrepreneurs effectively by carefully capturing key data
  • Perform other duties flexibly and creatively as needs arise

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Prepare deposits and bank reconciliations
  • Process and reconcile company credit card transactions
  • Serve as the main contact for payment- and expense-related questions with internal teams and external vendors
  • Record account receivables/revenue and reconcile against the fundraising system totals
  • Provide financial analysis and support to Development team
  • Process invoices and employee expense sheets, including coding, data entry and filing payable documentation
  • Ensure assigned balance sheet accounts are correctly stated and properly reconciled at the end of each month
  • Assist with Payroll timesheet completeness, benefit reconciliations and payroll processing
  • Calculate and record accruals prepaid, and fixed asset amortization journal entries
  • Void checks
  • Prepare and report 1099s and collect W-9s for all vendors
  • Assist with the annual audit

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance preferred
  • 2-3 years of related experience
  • Knowledgeable of financial accounting principles
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and communication skills
  • Knowledge and ability to work with computer-based accounting system – Fund EZ is our accounting system
  • Computer skills in MS Office, including Excel and Word
  • Manage time efficiently
  • Attend to details meticulously
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally
  • Collaborate flexibly with colleagues in a diverse and changing environment

Staff Accountant experience

  • Nonprofit accounting software: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Accounting: 3 years (Required)
