Accion Serving Illinois and Northwest Indiana is seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Director of Development located in Chicago, IL.

Job Description:

The Director of Development is a salaried, exempt position that reports to the CEO. The Director is responsible for supporting the annual goals of the organization for raising funds, fulfilling operational obligations, and positioning the organization for sustainable growth. The Director executes the strategy for the organization in partnership with the CEO and nurtures trusted relationships with donors. The Director oversees the development staff and is responsible for the professional development of the team.

Essential Duties:

Measurable Goals
  • Raise at least the budgeted amount from funders each year
  • Fulfill all operational obligations on time each month for donors
  • Contribute to a net surplus each year
Primary Responsibilities
  • Create a development strategy with the CEO, with a particular emphasis on establishing a significant individual donor base while growing our traditional funding sources. This includes:
    • Building relationships with individuals that will generate donations
    • Leading the development team in connecting with additional institutional donors (foundations, financial institutions, corporations, government, etc.)
  • Deliver clear messages for who we serve, the value we provide, and how we deliver that value effectively
  • Promote the organization’s work at events and site visits that focus on fundraising and visibility
  • Perform other duties flexibly and creatively as needs arise
Additional Responsibilities
  • Prepare proposals and deliver pitches to current and prospective funders
  • Report to donors as required in partnership with the Manager of Strategic Initiatives
  • Secure sponsorships for Accion events
  • Manage board giving in partnership with the CEO
  • Cultivate donor relationships originating with board members in partnership with the CEO
  • Provide backup when development staff is unavailable
  • Lead the Accion Associate Board
  • Promote Accion’s culture throughout the organization and with funders and partners

The Director should have experience in:
  • Building and maintaining an individual donor pipeline
  • Leveraging their personal and professional networks to raise funds
  • Raising funds from foundations, corporations (particularly financial institutions), individuals, and governments
  • Researching, articulating, formatting, and presenting compelling donor appeals and hosting effective fundraising events
  • Managing and developing staff members effectively
  • Working collaboratively with a Board of Directors and external committee members to leverage their networks and ensure monetary support from each volunteer
  • Working collaboratively in a leadership role to articulate and implement an organization’s strategic plan
